EXPLORA RAPA NUI SERVES UP VEGETABLES
FROM ITS OWN GARDEN
Sustainability in practice on Easter Island
SANTIAGO, CHILE, March 20, 2013 – Practicing sustainability is one thing; actually getting environmentally friendly results served up on your plate is quite another. At explora Rapa Nui on Easter Island, one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands, an organic garden planted by local partner Mike Rapu is bearing fruit. And zucchini. And bell peppers. And sweet potatoes. And much more – all without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
The organic garden took root at explora’s Posada de Mike Rapu in November 2012 – mid-spring in the southern hemisphere. From seeding to cropping, Rapu supervised every detail of the 4.5-hectare (11.12-acre) plot laid out on the hotel grounds. An accomplished agriculturalist, Rapu is a firm believer in the great potential of responsible gardening to provide fresh produce for explora travelers, while setting a positive example for island dwellers.
What can explora travelers look forward to on the dining circuit in Rapa Nui? Fresh, organically grown lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chives, zucchini, bell peppers, sweet peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, melon, watermelon, spinach, pineapple, and more. The garden is also open to stroll through, and travelers can arrange guided tours upon request.
The new organic garden is a perfect fit for the secluded lodge, which is situated on a hill overlooking the Pacific in the Te Miro Oone area of Easter Island. Opened in 2007, the 30-room lodge was the first in South America to be granted LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.
The benefits of local gardening are recognized world-wide and are of particular importance in Rapa Nui, one of the world’s most secluded locations. Guests can now enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables sourced steps away from the lodge. explora Rapa Nui anticipates being able to cut back on the amount of food it airlifts from mainland Chile, reducing CO2 emissions as a result.
Buen provecho! For more information visit www.explora.com or contact firstname.lastname@example.org for reservations.
explora offers its guests a new way of travelling, where three luxury lodges serve as gateways to explore some of the most remote areas in South America: the desert of Atacama, the southernmost tip of the continent at Patagonia, and Rapa Nui (aka Easter Island), in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. For the more adventurous travellers, explora offers multi-day nomadic journeys, known as Travesìas. Accompanied by an expert guide, personal chef and only a handful of other travellers, Travesìas
take guests through little-known, remote areas of Chile, Bolivia and Argentina,
to discover remarkable natural beauty.
Leave home, enjoy the journey, pack light, go far, forget the time, walk, deviate from the route, go outside when it rains, ask questions, try new flavours, don't stop, stop, talk with people, listen to stories about the place, protect nature.
