Students new to Iyengar yoga invited to attend conference

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, February 21, 2012 The annual conference of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada / Association canadienne de yoga Iyengar (IYAC/ACYI), entitled Iyengar Yoga Today - From The Source, takes place in Toronto, May 9-13, and there are several ‘firsts’ this year. For the first time, two senior guest teachers direct from Pune, India, will bring Iyengar’s teachings to Canadian students and teachers. BKS Iyengar, one of the foremost yoga masters in the world, and his daughter, Geeta Iyengar, are sending these trusted ambassadors to represent them. Another innovation for 2012, students new to Iyengar yoga are invited to attend several sessions of the conference to experience the teachings of BKS Iyengar, or “Guruji” as his pupils call him.

The IYAC/ACYI conference will be an intensive yet fulfilling learning experience for practitioners, with over 30 hours of teaching, including demonstrations, lectures, and yoga practice as well as pranayama (breathing technique). Over 300 yoga students are expected to attend from across Canada. Teachers Dr. Rajlaxmi Nidmarti and Raya Uma Datta, from the headquarters at the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, will pass on the teachings from the source. Now 93 years old, the yoga master practices for several hours each day at the Institute, but has reduced his travel schedule.

BKS Iyengar has been practicing and teaching yoga for more than 75 years. Celebrities and royalty are among his students, including Yehudi Menuhin, Aldous Huxley, Pope Paul VI, and The Queen Mother of Belgium. Iyengar yoga is now taught in 42 countries around the world, reaching millions of yoga students. BKS Iyengar’s books on yoga practice and philosophy have been translated into 13 languages: he is best known for Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In 2004, Time Magazine named BKS Iyengar one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The Iyengar Yoga Conference takes place at the Allstream Centre in Toronto, currently targeting a Silver LEED certification for its green energy commitment. Special rates have been negotiated for delegates at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
