BLUE FLAG FOR HARRISON HOT SPRINGS CREATES A NEW STANDARD FOR BEACHES IN BC

HARRISON HOT SPRINGS, BRITISH COLUMBIA, August 11, 2011: Parents considering Harrison Hot Springs for a beach vacation can now rest assured that this local resort community is striving to provide the top water quality and environmental levels in British Columbia. Harrison is the first resort in BC to take the challenge of meeting the rigorous criteria of Canada’s Blue Flag program. As a lake and beach community, Harrison has made a commitment to manage its beaches to the strict human health and environmental criteria outlined by the internationally acclaimed and United Nations endorsed eco-label.

“Qualifying for a Blue Flag is the first step along the path to creating a sustainable tourism economy for Harrison Hot Springs,” said Robert Reyerse, Executive Director, Tourism Harrison. “We are proud to lead the way in BC towards providing safe, clean beaches where water quality and environmental provisions are strictly monitored, making for a better vacation experience.”

Blue Flag operator, Environmental Defence, put Harrison Hot Springs through a rigorous qualification process. The community must satisfy 32 stringent criteria covering everything from water quality, environmental education and sustainable management, to the safety provisions and services beach users can expect to find when they visit. The program invites the local community, municipal government, health officials and beach users to collaborate in the process.

Blue Flags currently fly at 3,650 sites in 44 countries around the world, including 16 beaches and three marinas in Canada. More details about Blue Flag and the certified marinas and beaches can be found on the web site at www.blueflag.ca.

Environmental Defence is the Canadian Operator of the Blue Flag Program and Canada's environmental action organization, challenging and inspiring change in government, business and people.
